Why you can no longer multi-task:

Guys this was a good one for me because you wandered through the lazy river of egeek banter into an area I am fascinated with.
I have spent a lot of time thinking about creativity in the era of social. Mostly I’ve been trying to figure out how to get work done. Especially since I have become convinced that aside from executives, who are paid partially to compensate them for the prison of always having their cell phones on, the world is going to belong to the makers. You guys code, I write, doesn’t matter. When you make stuff you have to find a way to protect that time.
I’m a multi-tasker by necessity and can thrive with a zillion windows open but when it comes time to make stuff all that is unplugged. It’s generally either early am or late at night. Yeah it’s a flow but I also think it’s an intentional unplugging of sorts. In my last book I called it going “back to the lab” but somewhere in those shadows of my own thoughts and a blank page or screen I do my best work. If I don’t find that time I’m just, if you will, a retweeter.
So I’m kind of obsessed with it and I’ve never heard that “flow” descrip before so thanks for that one. I would also agree – the time I have spent figuring out how to avoid being on email all the time or prioritizing who can find me and when – that stuff has paid off too. Being accessible doesn’t mean signing your life over to the distraction stream.
As for the lazy river, although I enjoyed the concert last year one of my lasting memories from Orlando was seeing you guys relaxed in the pool while I was trying to find Abesh who was doing his usual frenetic thing so we could get to Santana. Ok, I was jealous. Maybe this year I’ll find out what the lazy river is all about. See you soon.

Hi Guys,
Great lazy ideas around for this episode, looks like a new lifehacking session of the show is starting to surface.
So, I couldn’t let this link go by after the ‘wall-e’ philosophical views that I also share; and here it goes:

Love Paul Grahams essays and ‘Maker’s Schedule, Manger’s Schedule’ is one of my favourites. A couple of years ago I was working really long hours and after reading this essay it really clicked, I was working 9 to 5 on manager’s schedule and post 5 on maker’s schedule. Since then I try and work at least half my day on maker’s schedule and I am much more productive, it’s definitely not easy to change the way you work but it’s worth it.

Thanks for the comments on the bad habits of multitasking. As our brain is just a single core that should be avoided. The context switch always takes a long time.
