A couple of years ago I had a crazy idea that we should all sit on a train together for several hours from Frankfurt up to Berlin for the SAP TechEd event and it turned out to be one of the coolest things ever! Heck we even had the youngest SCN member in attendance with us!
There were several photos taken and videos made. More importantly though there were connections made! In fact so much so that last year the community themselves did it again!
So this year as we starting getting ready for Berlin once again a bunch of us decided it would not be the same if we didn’t do the Cluetrain once again! Therefore for 2010 we began as a community to coordinate our travel and thus the 2010 SAP TechEd Cluetrain has been born!
So if you want to join us, it’s quite simple – add your name to the list and then go buy your ticket for ICE 598 which is the train that those of us signed up so far have selected. If for some reason you can’t make that one there is an alternative train listed but the bulk of us are going on ICE 598. We are also heading up on Saturday to ensure we are there for the Innovation Weekend!
Those who have taken the ride with us have all walked away with the same thoughts – it was perfect and the best opportunity in the world to get to know my fellow community members before I even get to the event! So take the chance and take the ride with us!
Besides there is no telling what juicy tidbits of information those of on the train might be sharing along the way – maybe a project listing of over 200 innovations? Maybe the newest versions of something? Only one way to find out…
And for those not familiar with where “cluetrain” comes from – check it out!

Here it is, you don’t want to miss out on this brand new event taking place this year!
Innovation Weekend (Sneak Preview)
For many weeks now, folks have been eagerly questioning Craig Cmehil, Jason Cao, and myself about what the RIA Hacker Nite, Insight Night and the Process Design Slam will look like this year at SAP TechEd ’10 .
I must admit that my colleagues have delighted me by helping me realize a dream I had last year of inviting developers, business intelligence specialists and process design experts to pool their talents and harmonize their skills. This year, rather than have separate evening events for SDN, BPX and BOC we’ve decided to help pool talents and community in an event that will move (during the course of a 30+ hour event) a business case from idea to prototype and will expose our communities to a plethora of new technologies from inside SAP as well as from partners.
Beginning in Berlin and Las Vegas this year we will host and invite a select group of community members and TechEd attendees to a two (2) day event of innovation, collaboration, designing, hacking, and implementation.
This event will take place on the Sunday and Monday prior to the Tuesday openings of SAP TechEd ’10 in Berlin and Las Vegas and will engage developers and process experts as well as BI business users in social innovation through an open platform.
Where: Berlin and Las Vegas
When: SAP TechEd 2010 Berlin, Oct. 10 -11 | Las Vegas,Oct. 16 -17 Sunday and Monday both locations (30+ hour Marathon)
Who: SAP TechEd attendees/invited community members/developers/process experts/BI business users

You might be wondering why I decided now was a good time to record an ABAP Freak Show series on the basics and architecture of Web Dynpro ABAP. After all shouldn’t I be busy with SAP TechEd 2010 preparations. As it turns out, the two are closely related. As custom development track lead for SAP TechEd 2010, I had the opportunity to really expand the amount of Web Dynpro ABAP development that was offered this year. At the same time I still had to work within budget restrictions. For example I really wanted to have a 4 hour hands-on for Advanced Web Dynpro ABAP. As it turns out I ended up having to break this topic up into 2 – 2 hour lectures and a 2 hour hand-on. I actually ended up with more content hours for Web Dynpro ABAP in the end by running out of 4 hour hands-on slots.
Not all the budgets restrictions worked out as nicely. I really needed to cut a 1 hour lecture. We have been presenting the introduction to Web Dynpro ABAP since 2005 (or some form even before then). I remember going to this session when I was still at customer working at Kimball International. Therefore it became a prime target for our reduction efforts.
In past years we have conducted a 1 hour lecture and a 4 hour hands-on for the introduction to Web Dynpro ABAP. The slides and presentation material are the same between these two sessions and often attendees went to both. Last year I taught both the lecture and hands-on version. By the end of the week in Las Vegas after presenting the same basic material 4 times in as many days, I was pretty sick of hearing it. I would imagine people that attended both the lecture and hands-on sessions probably felt similar.
Therefore we made a decision to no longer offer the 1 hour lecture version. As many customers are still just experiencing Web Dynpro ABAP for the first time as their companies upgrade we want to support their efforts. The 4 hour hands-on will remain. It is session CD160 (Las Vegas / Berlin). We believe that the time spent hands-on with the development environment is one of the best ways to learn the tool.
We didn’t completely discard the lecture version of the materials, however. Instead we decided the best way to service those who wish to begin learning Web Dynpro ABAP is to provide these materials as eLearning Videos all the time (for free) on SDN and Enterprise Geeks. So now you can study these introductory materials any time you want. Then come to TechEd and enforce what you learned via a Hands-On session or built up to try one of the more advanced Web Dynpro ABAP sessions.

Today’s unplanned and unscheduled show was dedicated to my friends in India undertaking an amazing experiment, today I noticed they were around 2000 KM into their 40 day journey so I thought it best to do some catch up for everyone.

No this is not about my upcoming trip to Bangalore in a few weeks but rather a very interesting project started by my friend Kartik. HORN OK PLEASE is an experiment with writing a book and all of this being done strictly using Social Media and online tools.
This weekend Kartik begins the “off road” portion of the adventure and I’ll be following along here from Germany using various online tools in order to help them along their way and to also be able to report back to the world where they are, now one of the very interesting things they will be doing along the way is to meet up with young individuals along the way with interests in technology and talk about Social Media, Enterprise, Technology and of course Capgemini and SAP.
So here’s wishing Kartik the best and don’t worry I’ll be tracking and trying several of our BI On Demand tools to see if I can’t keep you alive

I always hate cancelling shows however with the weather, my health, travel and holidays I simply don’t see much choice so until mid August I won’t be doing any live shows – now this is not to say that a show won’t pop up but I simply can’t commit to my regularly scheduled time slot for the next couple of weeks.
Enjoy the summer everyone!!

With the SAP TechEd (#sapteched) events starting to coming into I thought I would take the chance and grab Christine and put her on the spot with a quick update for everyone!
So here we are in my FMR on the Go mini series!
