Many of you know that I fancy photography and being the geek I am I like to play around with photo editing software as well. So having had a total bust on a photowalk today due to not so nice rainy/wet snowy weather I decided to pull out one of my all time favorite photos and play around a little bit.
This is is a classic black and white with a tad bit of color coming through, I’ve done a lot of these over the years and it’s always an exercise in patience and calm nerves and I find it surprisingly relaxing it to zoom in and out on the photo and select pixel by pixel the area I want to “expose as color”.
I think I’ll be ordering this one as well to frame and put on the wall!

Today’s show is all about taking chances and is a sequel to our last episode on “change”. Risk is there but not always bad, in fact there is no bad just degrees of positive!

Will the battle of HTML5 vs. Browser Plug-Ins be like this:

Or More Like This:
This week we welcome guest co-host Dan McWeeney filling in for Ed. Ed is out of the office because his wife just gave birth to their first child. Since Dan works for Adobe and works in the Adobe Flash/Flex world, we thought it would be the perfect podcast to dive into the hot topic of HTML5 verses Browser Plug-Ins (like Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight).
There has been a lot of debate lately (sparked largely by Apple and their refusal to have the Adobe Flash Plug-in on the iPhone/iPad) about exactly what the future role of Browser Plug-Ins will be given the advances that the next version of the HTML specification promises to bring. In this podcast both Dan and I provide our thoughts on the topic.
Dearest eGheads, we need your show ideas. If you have questions, suggestions, or topic ideas for future episodes, give us a shout here. Enjoy!

Talking PointsWow. I was just looking at someone else's blog, when I realized that I haven't posted on this blog for some time. But I had no idea that it has been about a year. Ironically, one of my last posts was about how I wanted to blog more. Well, that didn't happen. So it appears that my professional life as well as my personal life has taken precedence, which I have to say is not a bad thing. Work at SAP has been really busy in 2009, but I am happy with what I have contributed over the year. At the end of 2009, I moved from the EPM Solution Management team to the EPM RIG team, which in my opinion, is the right team for me. I have been creating tools and solutions for BPC NW, and publishing them in How-To guides on SDN. Those of you working with BPC NW, look for a new Backup/Restore tool coming soon, written by yours truly. I really enjoy this type of work, so I'm pretty happy about being on this team. I just got back from a trip to China, where we met with the Shanghai development team. It was a really good trip and the Shanghai developers are awesome guys. I just started on a new topic which will allow me to learn about compiler design, and it appears that I will be helping with the core development on this topic as well. Which means some more of my code will ship with an official SAP product, which is always cool. I also have been told that there is a project later in the year which will allow me to learn yet another language, and leverage the .net framework, so looking forward to that as well. So I'm not going to make another promise of blogging more in 2010, since it appears that I will not have enough time to anyway. Later for now.

Today’s show is all about change and the things happening around us, dealing with, accepting and realizing that no change is bad but some change is better than others.

Homepage - Who Moved My Cheese?: An Amazing Way to Deal with Change in Your Work and in Your Life
Years ago I was given this book my dear friends who wanted to remind me that I had friends who supported me and would be there for me as time moved on. At first I thought the book was a joke, a book about cheese little did I know that I would be reading a guide to the soul and to dealing with change and your fears in the face of change…
Perhaps a little about myself first, I’m no stranger to change I have dealt with change all my life having parents from two different cultures and countries, a father in the military and moving around the world quite often left me with no choice but to accept change head on. Over the years though one gets comfortable with what they have and they like being where they are, yet change comes whether you want it to or not and you have choices to make.
I’ve made many changes in my life, big decisions and little decisions. I choice to move North away from home and take a new job which led me further North and eventually overseas to Germany. More choices were made and I left one company for another, I married, I had children, I changed jobs and moved again and now here I am amidst multiple changes occuring all around me and I wonder am I “Hem”, “Haw”, “Sniff” or “Scurry” at the moment as these things take place around me? Am I aware of these changes and how they might impact me or am I hunkerd down in my section enjoying what I think I still have?
This book and it’s cute story are all about facing those fears, understanding them and opening your mind to change and the future. Right now I’m surrounded by changes, changes are taking place around us in rapid succession and we need to open our eyes and be aware of what we see, hear and also and most critically we need to be able to separate the pieces and understand the true impacts and not get caught up in the hustle and bustle. This is certainly no time to close our eyes and think “this has nothing to do with me”.
This book, again a very cute story, is all about that and how one might be thinking or acting right now. Taking a look a basic look at 4 types of personality the book pokes fun and helps one to understand which personality they might be representing right now and of course how they might better approach the situation and alter their thoughts to maximize the benefits of the changes taking place.
Some lessons I learned from the book,
Most importantly though change is a cycle and it will come again and again and the best thing you can do is keep doing what you are good at. I’ve lived by one main rule since I started working “everyone is replaceable and if you want to ensure your job then continue to show that you can adapt, learn and innovate and you do and are always willing to give more than 100%”

Today’s show will focus on “giving” and our up coming and second annual 24 Hour Marathon for “Doctor’s Without Borders”. Last year we managed to raise over $4000 dollars online and a total well over $5000 (with offline donations as well). So this year I’m holding a poll for you to decide how much we should set as a goal and of course a sign up sheet for those who would like to sign up and participate during the live event and share with the community their products, inventions, activities and/or experiences. For example perhaps Marilyn will join in to discuss the article in the Huffington Post?

I recently received an email that has had me smiling every time I have thought about it since. Last year, in September, I did a show about “Micro Finance” and specifically about “Kiva” a lending site. The mail I received was the result of the “loan” that I gave while live on the show.
Personally I believe very much in the old proverb, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish you feed him for a lifetime.“, therefore when I came across Kiva I thought it was a brilliant way to give a donation. I believe a lot in giving to give but I also like to support people who want to live themselves and so Kiva allowed me to do it. I said I would also donate once and wait and see what happened before doing it again.
The mail I received was the fact that the $25.00 I loaned had just been repaid in full!
It was an amazing feeling to receive the mail and to realize that this person, Elizabeth Vlejo, is living a dream and making things happen!
Elizabeth Viejo business is a rice grower. She tills a hectare of farm so closely from their house. Aside from farm, she also raises pigs. She feeds and bathes them everyday to be able to grow her pigs healthy and heavy. She has four children. Her eldest child is 24 years old and is still living with her.
Receiving a loan of Php 8,000 is truly worthwhile because she needs resources for farm financing. The seeds that she used in her farm are not yet paid , the loan will help paying the seeds. She also planned buying 2 piglets and feed. She said that CEVI gives the lowest interest rate, which is 2% a month, and is very affordable to repay
So for me Kiva is a winner and I’m be searching for the next person to help this weekend! I also started a group for anyone who would like to share their own adventures. Together we can change the world is the thought, so how real can we make?

Today’s show takes a look at a new program underway in Australia called “Energise Women”.

I’ve been working with Sarah now for a the past few weeks around the topics of reputation and community and we finally had a chance to record this short conversation to let the broader community know about what she is working on and of course how they themselves can participate!
I’ve always considered research, knowledge sharing and exploration a major part of a successful community and so it’s been my pleasure to get a chance to work with so many young students focused on those aspects in relation to the communities I have been involved with.
To get in touch with Sarah and participate in her research you can find her at the following addresses: http://www.sarahotner.com or http://uk.linkedin.com/in/sarahotner or http://openid.sap.com/SMGOtner
This is part 6 of a 6 part series on User Interface flexibility in the ABAP environment. Part 6 of this series looks a bit to the future with the new Local Page Builder/CHIPs/Sidepanel functionality that is coming in NetWeaver 7.02. The Enterprise Geeks love gifts and free stuff, so this is a special shout out and thanks to fellow eGhead Matt Harding for putting together the Enterprise Geeks theme song. You can check out some of Matt’s other music on his MySpace page. The music for the eGeeks theme song was taken from his original track “Damn Ugly”, which is pretty Damn Funny.
Some other eGheads such as Thomas Jung, Gregor Wolf, and Graham Robinson have already mentioned using this as intro music for their sessions at various tech events. Now these are eGheads with style!
Cheers to you, Mr. Harding!
